Surface protection

Despite the development of advanced materials which provide high levels of wear resistance and excellent running characteristics, surface protection remains essential to ensure that components are able to withstand mechanical stress and external detrimental processes (see Corrosion).

Influential factors

  • Nature of attack
    (e. g. corrosion, cavitation, erosion or abrasion)
  • Duration of attack (temporary protection during transport and storage or long-term protection in the event of continuous mechanical stress)
  • Application (e. g. handling of drinking water, reactor technology)
  • Economic efficiency (e. g. single- or multi-layer coating)
  • Safety
    (e. g. risk of secondary damage caused by coatings peeling away)
  • UV radiation from sunlight in the case of outdoor installation

Painting is the most widespread form of surface protection for unalloyed ferrous materials. Its effectiveness depends largely on the pretreatment of the surface (e. g. sand-blasting). It is advisable to consult the pump manufacturer for the best protection in relation to the product application.
