Enhancing Power Generation Efficiency: A Success Story in Indonesia's Coal Fired Power Sector

By upgrading Power Plant UBJOM PLTU Rembang's Main Boiler Feed Pump (MBFP), we implemented a reliable backup solution in case of turbine issues, preventing potential plant shutdowns. Additionally, with the upgraded pump serving as a backup for the Boiler Feed Pump Turbine (BFPT), the coal-fired power plant unit can maintain its power output without experiencing any derating, further demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of our pump upgrades.

The project

Pushing Boundaries in Power Generation

PLTU Rembang marks a significant milestone in Indonesia's power generation sector, being the pioneering endeavor to uprate MDBFP in a coal-fired power plant. With a focus on enhancing efficiency and performance, PT. PLN Nusantara Power aimed to elevate the plant's capabilities to match industry standards.

The client

KSB for PT. PLN Nusantara Power

PT. PLN Nusantara Power, established in 2015, stands as a pivotal player in Indonesia's energy landscape with its 2x315 MW CFPP in Rembang, Central Java. With approximately 150–200 employees, the company is committed to advancing power generation in the region.

Providing reliable electricity to the local community, PT. PLN Nusantara Power plays a vital role in supporting its economic development. Through its efficient operations and adherence to environmental regulations, Power Plant UBJOM PLTU Rembang strives to be a responsible corporate citizen while meeting the growing energy demands of its stakeholders.

The challenge

Interchangeability and Competitive Pricing

One of the primary challenges KSB faced was ensuring the interchangeability of spare parts with BFPT components while maintaining competitive pricing. This necessitated holistic planning and strategic solutions to meet industry demands. Once on site, the task was to operate in a manoeuvrable and agile manner despite limited space availability and to integrate existing instruments into the new, upgraded technological setup.

The solution

Carefully selected and fully integrated pump technology

KSB's team, led by the KSB SupremeServ-Team and TSS Energy Department, meticulously addressed the challenge by selecting and adapting components from CHTC4/7 to CHTC5/6, aligning them with BFPT specifications. This enhanced system was able to increase the capacity of the boiler feed water system from 30 % to 50 %. The individual components: High-efficiency, electrically driven pumps with matching hydraulic couplings, fully equipped with accessories such as instrumentation, minimum flow valve, feedwater bypass gate valves, check valves, strainers and further equipment. This comprehensive approach not only met the customer's requirements but also surpassed expectations in terms of reliability and cost-effectiveness.
