KSB SuPremE® motors for the next generation of brewers

Tertiary education and other training institutes often lack the first-class and, especially, state-of-the-art technical equipment their students will later be using on the job. Many steps involved in the process can therefore only be taught in theory. KSB acknowledges that it is important for students to have professional equipment available right from the start. When approached by Munich's Doemens Academy, the company immediately donated several premium pumps for the academy's new building.

The project:

New building of the Doemens Academy

With its new building in the suburb of Gräfelfing the Doemens Academy is ready for the next decades of providing training of the highest level to its students from the national and international beverage and food industries. The flexible and modern pilot plant allows both teachers and students to respond swiftly to any developments in the world of brewery, beverage and food applications.

The costumer:

Doemens Academy

The Doemens Academy in Munich was founded in 1895. The company operates worldwide and is recognised for offering qualifications, professional development and consultation in the brewery, beverage and food industries. Apart from a complete brewery, the academy offers comprehensive laboratory set-ups, teaching and testing systems for producing beer and soft drinks, for processing foodstuffs and for bottling and packaging the product.

The challenge:

Real-life test set-up

To provide training at the highest level it is pivotal for training and seminar rooms to be fitted with technically appropriate state-of-the-art equipment. This was an objective for which Doemens needed comprehensive support from industry players.

For fitting its brewhouse in the teaching and testing brewery the academy required several high-quality pumps, offering students the opportunity of trying out different beer production processes in a real-life test set-up.

To allow the students to conveniently test different processes the mashing pump, wort recirculation pump, lautering pump and CIP pump have to be able to respond flexibly and quickly to different pumping requirements.

The solution:

Synchronous motors for a high efficiency

When the academy specified its technological requirements in a tender, KSB spontaneously decided to support Doemens with a total of six powerful pumps as a donation in kind.

Now the cooling system is fitted with two Movitec pumps operated on a PumpDrive variable speed system, providing the requested flexibility. In other work environments Movitec pumps are often operated for many months without operators having to make any adjustments. In the Doemens testing brewery, by contrast, students can observe the effects of different configurations on the brewing process within the shortest amount of time. PumpDrive can be used to control the flow rate at any time and PumpMeter to check the immediate effects.

Another four premium pumps made by KSB are operating in the brewhouse: Vitacast Bloc pumps for mashing, wort recirculation, lautering and CIP provide students with the opportunity to experiment with the brewing process. Every detail counts in the complex coordination of the various process steps when it comes to the taste and consistency of beer as the end product.

Vitacast is a maintenance-friendly investment casting pump, which was specially developed by KSB for the food and beverage industry. Designed with very little dead volume, Vitacast is particularly easy to clean and has got an excellent flushing capability. Servicing is very easy too as the pump is simple and fast to dismantle. The pump's high surface quality is achieved by a special polishing procedure. Built of high-quality stainless steel, the pump is also completely corrosion resistant.

In environments in which Vitacast has to respond to fluctuating demand with frequent changes in speed the full strength of its synchronous motor comes to the fore. When the speed is lowered, asynchronous motors lose up to 30 % of their efficiency; KSB SuPremE® motors only lose 3 - 5 %.

Operators save a significant amount of energy costs by using a KSB pump with KSB SuPremE® synchronous motor. This is one of the key arguments when selecting pump and drive technology for industrial applications.
