KSB GIW, Inc. Launches Groundbreaking GIW® TDW Pump for Sustainable Tailings Management

The GIW® TDW pump’s innovative expeller seal technology offers unsurpassed output in the most challenging tailings pond dewatering applications without requiring gland water during operation, delivering a more sustainable tailings management solution.

KSB GIW Inc., the global leader in the design, manufacture, and application of heavy-duty centrifugal slurry pumps, proudly announces the launch of its latest innovation, the GIW® TDW pump. Developed to meet the unique requirements of tailings pond dewatering service, the GIW® TDW sets a new industry standard in performance, sustainability, and operational efficiency.

At the core of the TDW's innovation lies its fully integrated expeller shaft seal, which eliminates the need for mining operations to transport, filter, and clean gland water. Not only does this drive significant operational cost savings and increased efficiency, it also reduces environmental impact.

“In the oil sands industry, there is a heavy focus on water conservation. Mine operators came to KSB GIW requesting a pump for tailings pond operation that required no gland water,” said Ronnie Willis, Engineering Senior Product Manager at KSB GIW. “Our engineering team drew upon its history of lab performance testing and pump design and reviewed the customer operating conditions. From there, we developed a range of heavy duty, compact tailings pond pumps that require no gland water and are designed for long wear life—the GIW® TDW pump series.”

In addition to its technological advancements, the GIW® TDW can replace existing pumps that do require gland seal water. KSB GIW engineers can evaluate field retrofits and make recommendations so that mining operations can upgrade to the TDW with minimal modifications to existing infrastructure.

Built with KSB GIW’s unmatched attention to durability and reliability, the GIW® TDW pump is designed for easier maintenance and reduced downtime. The pump’s wet end is constructed from proprietary Gasite™ white iron alloys for maximum wear life. And a redesigned pedestal means that the pump can be lifted as a complete unit for streamlined maintenance and replacement, while features like impeller release rings and an adjustable suction liner make for faster servicing.

As KSB GIW's latest innovation, the GIW® TDW line’s hydraulic design is the result of decades of engineering experience and materials expertise. The result is a pump designed to deliver lower total cost of ownership by maximizing cost savings and optimizing operational efficiency—all while helping customers achieve their environmental stewardship targets.

With the GIW® TDW series, KSB GIW continues its commitment to delivering innovative pumping solutions, meeting the evolving needs of our customers, and advancing a more sustainable future.

"All-in-all, the GIW® TDW is designed to offer a low total cost of ownership by reducing operating costs, requiring less maintenance, and providing a long run time," said Mollie Timmerman, KSB GIW’s Oil Sands Business Development Manager. "Our team has years of application and operating experience, and we're eager to bring that knowledge to the field and discuss with operators how we can improve their operations and bring additional value.”
