Desalinated seawater for the people of Jerusalem

Water has always been a precious commodity in the dry areas of the Middle East, particularly in the region around Jerusalem in Israel. To safeguard the water supply for decades to come, national water utility company MEKOROT was commissioned to build a new supply system to pump desalinated seawater from the coast toward the inland areas. KSB provided four large RDLO water pumps for the newly built Kisalon 2 pump station.

The project:

Desalinated seawater for Jerusalem

The construction of the new water supply system is regarded as a national project in Israel and connects the people of Jerusalem and surrounding areas to the national water transport system, which brings desalinated seawater from the Mediterranean coast to the households and industries of the capital.

The project was completed in 2022 and includes the erection of a pump station, a 13-kilometer tunnel through the mountains of Jerusalem and a network of pipes measuring four metres in diameter.

The customer:

Israeli national water utility company MEKOROT

Headquartered in Tel Aviv, MEKOROT Water Company Ltd. was founded in 1937. Today, it employs some 1900 members of staff and generates sales revenue of around $ 1 billion. The company supplies Israel with 80 percent of its drinking water and operates a supply network known as National Water.

To realise the new water infrastructure, MEKOROT was authorised by the Israeli government to devise plans for building the Ayalon-Jerusalem plant. The purchase of surrounding land and final construction of the station posed a special challenge for MEKOROT. The project was finally completed in six years' time at a cost of NIS 2.5 billion (approximately 68 million euros).

The challenge:

To supply large water pumps while adhering to tight constraints

Customer MEKOROT placed high demands on its potential suppliers. Required were the planning, manufacture, delivery, installation, commissioning and testing of four large-volume water pumps. Adding to this were extensive warranty agreements as well as additional technical services. Finally, everything had to be completed within tight budget targets.

The solution:

Four RDLO water pumps ─ supplied by KSB

KSB was the only supplier that could meet all the customer's technical, logistical and budget requirements. Other providers were not able to meet these expectations. Although contract negotiations took a fair while, all discussions were handled in a fair and professional manner. What secured the contract for KSB was that it was already known to MEKOROT for being a reliable supplier of UPA, Multitec and Movitec pumps and that the company could provide on-site service and assistance.

This, in turn, meant that KSB could always assist the customer as a competent partner throughout the implementation phase as well as offer advice on securing optimal engineering solutions.

Four RDLO 700-980 volute casing pumps were finally delivered, installed and commissioned. This solution was a perfect match for the requirements defined. The operating efficiency of these pumps has proved so high that significant energy savings can be realised.
