Solar thermal systems use movable mirror surfaces to concentrate the incoming sunlight on a small area. This concentrated energy is used to heat a thermal oil or directly generate steam, driving a turbine connected to a generator to produce electricity. Thermal solar systems have the advantage over photovoltaic systems of being able to store energy and are thus capable of base load operation.
